It targets players who enjoy long-term, low-pressure simulation games with building, life-management, and social aspects.


3) What audience pleasures does the game provide?
The game provides pleasures of caregiving, achievement, creative building, and ongoing progression.


4) How does the game encourage in-app purchases?
It encourages in-app purchases by gating premium items, faster progress, or aesthetic rewards behind currencies or VIP status. 

Representations

1) How do the expansion pack (DLC) trailers reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies?
Some DLC trailers reinforce consumerist and capitalist ideologies, while seasonal or community-themed expansions may challenge norms by celebrating diversity or creativity.


2) What stereotypes have you identified in The Sims FreePlay?
Stereotypes include traditional family structures (nuclear families), gendered roles, and perhaps idealised “middle-class” aspiration.


3) What media theories can you apply to representations in The Sims FreePlay?
Media theories such as Baudrillard’s hyperreality (the Sims world as a simulacrum) and representation theory (how identity is constructed through gameplay) apply.

Read this Forbes article on gender and racism in The Sims franchise and answer the following questions:

1) How realistic does The Sims intend to be?
The Sims intends to be believable rather than hyper-realistic, focusing on life simulation without darker social issues. 


2) How has The Sims tried to create more realistic representations of ethnicity?
It has tried to make ethnicity more realistic through more customisation in “Create a Sim” and a broader palette of appearances. 


3) How has The Sims responded to racism and sexism in society?
The Sims response to racism and sexism is to largely sidestep them — they emphasize inclusivity (e.g., same-sex marriage) but avoid negative social conflict. 


4) What is The Sims perspective on gender fluidity and identity?
The Sims’ perspective on gender fluidity is cautious: while all hairstyles and accessories have become more gender-neutral, the game still uses a binary gender system.
